What is "Rainbows of Love"?

Rainbows of Love is a nonprofit, 501(c)[3], tax-exempt corporation dedicated to making the lives of children receiving long-term medical care a little brighter.  Founded on May 18, 2000, Rainbows of Love was inspired by Jan Alston’s daughter, Allison, who is a cancer survivor.  The effects of cancer on the Alston family and the support they received during Allison’s illness motivated Jan to begin the pillowcase project.  Along with her friends Amy Allen and Nancy Belflower, Alston founded Rainbows of Love with the goal of giving personalized pillowcases to children with cancer.  The project began in June, 2000 for the University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill, where Allison received her cancer treatments.  The pillowcases have Allison’s rainbow design appliquéd on the edge along with each child’s name.  Included with the pillowcase is a poem of love and hope written by Jan Alston.  "Rainbows", the CD single written and performed by Mark Crawford Williams, is also given to each child.

Our Mission

The treatment of cancer usually requires many trips to the hospital including countless nights away from home.  The love and support of family, church, and friends can make such a difference in the lives of families faced with this challenge. It is amazing what a kind word or deed, even from a stranger can mean to these families. The current mission of Rainbows of Love is to give a personalized pillowcase to each child diagnosed with cancer in North Carolina. In hopes of providing a bright point in the lives of more children battling this serious disease, our future plans include expanding our service to pediatric oncology units in other hospitals.

This project is dedicated to the children and their families who are struggling with cancer and the doctors and nurses who become their second family.
